The success of the Killingly girls tennis program was not generated overnight.

    La1nExpo0519.jpg

Several high school student teams, with help from local businesses, showed off their improvement projects Friday at the ninth annual QVCC/QMI High School Manufacturing Expo.

Freshman Keri Lehtonen struck out 11 batters in her first career no-hitter in the Plainfield softball team’s 12-0 victory over New London on Friday.

Blake Smaldone had 17 saves Friday and Kevin McMorrow scored three goals and assisted on another to help the Hyde-Woodstock boys lacrosse team win the Southeastern New England Prep School Council championship with a 10-5 win over the Rocky Hill School.

Here are today's high school games:

Casey Kitka’s lone hit of the day, a single down the third-base line with no outs, brought home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the Tourtellotte baseball team in an 8-7 win over Woodstock on Thursday.

The Ellis Tech softball team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to drop Putnam, 12-11, and snap a five-game losing streak in its final game of the season Thursday.

    lc3softballcolor0518.JPG

Kelli Connors led the way to Waterford’s third straight crown, holding the Bobcats to one run and six hits in a complete-game 10-1 victory.

    lC1eastlymeCOL051812.jpg

Norwich Free Academy worked its way to a 9-8 lead in the second half before falling, 11-10, in overtime to East Lyme, which took the Eastern Connecticut Large Division boys lacrosse title with the win.

    lC1golfCOL051812.jpg

Chad Vincent shot a personal-record 37 on the front nine Thursday afternoon, sharing medalist honors with teammate Justin Bohara and propelling NFA over Woodstock, 41⁄2-21⁄2, to clinch a share of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division title. NFA (11-2) finished divisional play 9-1. Woodstock, at 8-1, has to beat Bacon Academy to ensure a tie for the title.

Lyman Memorial dropped Griswold, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon and clinched a share of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division baseball title.

For the five teams in Wednesday’s Constitution State Conference East Division track meet, the primary goal wasn’t winning the meet, but getting as many participants qualified for the CSC championship next Tuesday and the Class S championship the following week.

Brandon Keogan’s heart is in his music, and this weekend, both his heart and his music will go to friends he lost in a December 2010 car crash.

Top-seeded Marianapolis waited until the last possible moment to capture the Southeastern New England Prep School Council baseball championship, 2-1, over second-seeded Providence Country Day in a game played at Nichols College on Wednesday.

Stacy Baranski shot a team-low 52 to help Woodstock Academy girls golf team beat NFA, 216-218, and host Bacon, 216-223, on Thursday at Chanticlair Golf Course. Sothea Semmelrock added a 53 for the Centaurs (4-4).

    lC1blaxCOL051612.jpg

Norwich Free Academy could have ruined the debut of Woodstock Academy's new lacrosse field with a 17-8 win Tuesday, but the Centaurs were happy to have the field at all.

Justin Bohara, like almost everyone else at Monday’s Wildcat Invitational on Monday, was lamenting the ones that got away. In the Norwich Free Academy sophomore’s case, those shots came on the green where the short stick betrayed him a couple of times, but there was little about which Bohara could complain. He came into the invitational with a five-handicap at the Norwich Golf Club, meaning his usual finish is around a 76. He was two strokes better than that Monday, finishing as the top local player with a 74.

Scott Derosier stepped down as the Killingly boys basketball coach after 25 seasons with the program, including the last 19 as head coach.

    lC1golfCOL051512.jpg

When Woodstock Academy’s Greg Pike approached the 11th green, he spotted teammate Ryan Willis on the 12th tee and asked, “How are things going?” Willis, the defending Eastern Connecticut Conference champion, stuck out his tongue and let loose a loud raspberry. It was a common assessment by ECC players and teams at the 40th annual Wildcat Invitational golf tournament at the Norwich Golf Club.

    Manwaring, Alex.JPG

After setting an Eastern Connecticut Conference record with 2,572 rushing yards and leading his team to the Class M state championship game, Ledyard senior running back Alex Manwaring was named the All-Bulletin Player of the Year in football. For more on the All-Bulletin players of the year, visit NorwichBulletin.com/sports/allbulletin2011

    lc3brineIIcolor0215.jpg

There were a number of reasons, Gary Brine felt, why the time was right to step down as football coach at Woodstock Academy last week.

At a press conference for New London student-athletes, Elmore announced that he signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at the United States Military Academy. Elmore cried as he thanked his mother, Michelle Lucas, for helping him through a tough childhood to reach the goal of attending college.

As the league moves closer to another two-year realignment plan that will be decided by the league’s principals in October, the coaches voted, 12-3, in favor of a two-division format to start in 2013.

    lC1ledyardCOL121211.jpg

It was the kind of hit that could almost be felt from the sideline, which meant it couldn’t have felt good on the field.

Early in the second quarter, Ledyard running back Alex Manwaring was trying to find a seam over the left side when whatever hole he may have spotted was suddenly filled by Ansonia linebacker Tyler Wood. The 5-foot-11, 172- pound senior’s bone-jarring hit stopped Manwaring in his tracks for no gain and forced a Ledyard punt. It was the story of the game for the Ledyard offense.

    lc1ledyardIcolor1211.jpg

The Chargers waltzed away with their state-record 17th state football title with a 38-0 win in the Class M championship game at Rentschler Field.

    lc5ledyardIIcolor1211.jpg

This is a team that has much to celebrate.

    lc5footballcolor1211.jpg

With 1 minute, 33 seconds left in the Class M state championship game on Saturday, Ansonia running back Arkeel Newsome was handed the ball for the 42nd time on his own 5-yard line.

The Colonels head to the high school this morning to board the buses for a trip to Rentschler Field in East Hartford for their 10:30 a.m. Class M state championship game against Ansonia.

    lc1ansoniacolor1209.JPG

The Chargers have averaged 365 yards on the ground through their first 12 games of the season and pass for fewer than 70. Any defensive coordinator who looks at those numbers thinks: “How many people can I get in the box?”

Think of Ansonia, and usually the image of a hardscrabble, blue-collar city comes to mind.

    lc3buonocorecolor1209.jpg

Ledyard football coach Jim Buonocore and his counterpart, Ansonia’s Tom Brockett, come from different sides of the state. But when they face off for the Class M championship at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, they have much in common.

    lc1ledyardcolor1208.JPG

They were only freshmen and had no impact on the game, yet Ledyard’s loss in the 2008 state Class M football title game resonates with the Colonels’ current senior class.

On Tuesday, the Colonels and their opponent, Ansonia, were among the eight schools on hand at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, where for the second straight year it will host all four championship games.

    lC1leeCOL120611.JPG

Ledyard's Andrew Lee excited his teammates with a stunning kick during practice last week which. He rode his feelings from that experience into last Saturday’s Class M state semifinal against Wolcott. It’s easy for a 5-for-5 performance on PATs to go unnoticed in a 35-0 Colonels’ victory. But heading into the title game against Ansonia at Rentschler Field, the matchup could come down to Lee’s right leg. He’s preparing for the possibility.

    lC1ledyardCOL120511.jpg

Each week, Ledyard football coach Jim Buonocore gives his team a multi-page briefing to help it prepare for the next game. Week after week, the bottom of the first page features a quote. Sometimes it’s meant as a reminder, sometimes it’s meant to teach and sometimes it’s meant to inspire. Quotations might seem more appropriate for Jeopardy than high school football, but Buonocore’s selection for Saturday’s Class M semifinal couldn’t have been more relevant.

    lc1ledyardcolor1204.jpg

The Colonels posted their second playoff shutout in four days, a 35-0 win over Wolcott on Saturday in a state Class M semifinal at Middletown High School.

Ledyard earned a trip to the Class M state championship game after the No. 3 Colonels shut out No. 7 Wolcott, 35-0, in the semifinals on Saturday.

    lc1ledyardIcolor1203.jpg

At no point in the high school football season is there a shorter time between games than the quarterfinals and semifinals of the state playoffs.

     Congratulations to ECC College Athletes
From its inception 75 years ago, the ECC has been sending graduated athletes to a wide variety of higher levels of competition where many have enjoyed success.  Collegiate and professional programs have discovered that competition between ECC athletes has prepared young men and women for the challenges in athletics that follow graduation from secondary schools. The result: coaches, scouts and recruiters view Eastern Connecticut as a good source of program ready talent and they are frequently seen attending local competitions.
