Dominique Weigel said it was déjà vu in her ECC Fencing Championship finals match against Norwich Free Academy teammate Eleni Provotas.
As a junior last season, Weigel made it to the tournament finals, only to lose to Provotas' older sister, Tina.
This year's match may have provided Weigel with a flashback, but the result this time around was completely different.
Weigel defeated the younger Provotas, 15-10, to earn her first individual ECC title at Griswold High School on Saturday. As a team, the Wildcats won their second ECC championship in as many years for boys and girls.
The NFA girls defeated second-place Griswold, 20-46.
Weigel said the Wildcats haven't accomplished all of their goals yet.
"Our goal is to win team states and to get a banner up in our school," she said.
The top seed after pool-play, Bronwynne Nagle, placed third overall. The Ledyard student lost to Eleni Provotas in the semifinals, but beat Jacqueline Csisar, of St. Bernard, in the third-place match. The top four finishers were named ECC All-Stars.
Boys results
The NFA boys took a 27-36 victory over Ledyard in the team results. Tyler Lawhead paced the Wildcats with a third-place finish overall. None of the Wildcats made the finals, but all four placed in the top-10.
"NFA does have a little bit of an advantage over the other schools just because of the size of the school," NFA coach Kurt Young said. "We have more students that are interested in it, so our team is a little deeper."
He added he was still proud of the effort out of his fencers.
Despite coming from one of the tournament's smallest teams, Bacon Academy's Cooper Johnson dominated the boys' single-elimination tournament for his first ECC title.
