Watching the Waterford softball team's offense is a guessing game. The question isn't how much it will score as much as when the dam will break.
Nursing a one-run lead late in Friday's Eastern Connecticut Conference championship game against Fitch, the only team to beat the Lancers this season, there was a sense that Waterford was biding its time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
"All we need is something little," Waterford shortstop Katelyn Sykora said.
There was nothing little about the bottom of the sixth for second-seeded Waterford as the Lancers batted around, scored seven runs on six hits and won their third straight ECC title with an 8-0 win over their divisional rivals at Griswold High School.
Waterford softball coach Liz Sutman honored
Waterford softball coach Liz Sutman was named Coach of the Year by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance on Monday.
The nine-year Lancers coach led her team to a 27-0 record and a Class L state title in 2010, the program's first undefeated season. Sutman was a pitcher and first baseman at Harvard and played field hockey, basketball and softball at East Lyme.
Sutman and fellow Coach of the Year Steve Waters, Farmington's boys soccer coach, are the first coaches to be honored from their respective schools in the award's 36-year history. Sutman and Waters will be honored at the CSWA's Gold Key Dinner on April 17 in Southington
