The high schools in Connecticut are organized for interscholastic sports in conferences or leagues based primarily on geography although there are numerous other factors/variables that are given consideration. The number of leagues within the State varies from time to time, as they expand or contract, from ten to fifteen. Presently, the ECC is one of eleven leagues with three or four schools unattached. The pinnacle of success for any school in any sport is the winning of a State Championship.
Overall, performance by ECC teams at the State level has been reasonably good. In some sports there has been a definite touch of dominance: Baseball, Girls Basketball, Girls Outdoor Track, Wrestling, and X-Country.
BASEBALL: ECC has had at least one team reach the State Championship game in 36 of the last 42 years.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: at least one team in the State Finals in 16 of the last 19 seasons including two division winners in 2009.
GIRLS TRACK: at least 1 Division Champion in 26 of last 34 years.
WRESTLING: 50 Division winners over the last 37 years with a clean 4 division sweep in 1988. Note: Wrestling has honored ten ECC Coaches with State Wrestling Coach of the Year honors.
X-COUNTRY: Girls teams have been winners of at least one Division in 34 of the 37 years of competition. Boys teams swept all three divisions races in 1988, 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2001.
